Common reasons people reach out

You don’t need to have it all figured out

People often come in with a sense that something isn’t working, without a clear name for it yet. Some of what I see most often:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Low mood and depression
  • Self-harm and suicidal thoughts
  • School stress and perfectionism
  • Intense emotions and relationship storms
  • Family conflict and communication breakdowns
  • Parenting a struggling teen
  • Life transitions and the move into adulthood
  • Feeling stuck in the same patterns

How I work

More than one mind in the story

My work is relational, psychodynamic and grounded in mentalizing: the very human capacity to make sense of behavior, our own and other people’s, in terms of what’s going on inside. Feelings, wishes, fears, intentions.

We all lose it under stress. Minds narrow, we stop wondering and start knowing, and relationships get stuck. Therapy is a place to slow down, get curious again, and make room for more than one mind in the story.

Getting started

What the first steps look like

  1. Reach outCall or email. A short message is enough; you don’t need to explain everything.
  2. A brief phone conversationWe talk about what’s going on and whether my approach seems like a good fit.
  3. First sessionsWe take a few meetings to understand the situation, get to know each other and agree on goals. For teens, parents are usually part of the start.

A bit about me

I’ve worked in mental health for more than 25 years. Alongside my practice, I teach psychotherapy, family therapy and mentalization-based treatment to psychiatry residents and fellows at Baylor College of Medicine, and I supervise social workers working toward their clinical license. Teaching and supervising are some of my favorite parts of this work, and they keep me curious.
